How to Predict the Weather With a Cup of Coffee and Other Techniques for Surviving the 9-5 Jungle
Dust off your native survival instincts and update them for the modern world - whether it's negotiating the car park at Tesco, anti-interrogation techniques at customer service desks, or navigating by electricity pylon. A smart, spoof survival guide - to the 9-5. Ray Mears' and Bruce Parry's advice is all very well if you're stuck up the Amazon without a paddle, but what about finding your way to a seat on a crowded bus, predicting the weather with a coffee in Starbucks or getting rid of cold callers with a microwave? Harnessing the laws of science, nature and human behaviour, this book revisits and reinvents the tricks that got us through our savage past and updates them for the 21st century. It arms you with a caveman's toolkit for survival wherever you may be - Starbucks, the office, or a crowded tube on a Friday night - and tells you all you need to know to transform your daily grind into a non-stop adventure (you don't even have to wear khaki).

A Rational Animal, and other philosophical essays on the Nature of Man
These "philosophical essays on the nature of man" are united by a concern to develop and defend an Aristotelian view. This insists that we are: both essentially and entirely creatures of mortal flesh and blood; and uniquely rational animals - animals which can, and cannot but, make choices between alternatives. Particular essays apply these ideas to - among other things- historiography, psychoanalysis, experimental psychology, human physiology, and the contrast between the human and non-human population studies of Malthus and Darwin. The D/W is clipped. There are two pink stamps on the front end papers stating that the book has been withdrawn from Merton Public Libraries. The pages inside the boards and the end papers have old stains from sticky tape in places and one or two end pages have been partially or completely torn out.

The Book of Gremlins
Published in 1980 by J. M. Dent. Small (approx. 2cm closed tear to top of wrapper. Inscribed by previous owner.(Hard to see!) Most people at some time in their life have been the target of Gremlins, but few have seen a Gremlin in the flesh. For this very reason, much is known about Gremlin activity, but very little about the creatures themselves. Now, all this has changed, for this amazing book by two fearless gremlinologists details the results of years of chaotic research into the true nature of Gremlins. The publication of this book will revolutionize gremlinology the study of Gremlins. In its way, it is more important than even Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species', for he published his studies on the visible world. Ridley and Neary are here documenting the world of Gremlins who, under normal circumstances, remain invisible to the human eye. Through an amazing feat of scientific engineering, this heroic pair developed and built the gremelscope which has enabled them not only to observe the creatures, but also to communicate with them. The Gremlins themselves were so astounded that they presented them with the Gremel Prize for Literature. There is little doubt that this major work will radically change traditional mythological research. Bryan Neary the arty one has captured the unbelievable world of the Gremlin in his detailed and accurate paintings in glorious Gremlincolour, which adorn every page of the book. Bryan Neary, who is a Fellow of the Royal Gremlin Academy, has had his paintings hung in many parts of the world from trees, lamp-posts, flag-poles etc. In Paris, his work can be seen hanging in the lou. An artist of great vision, mostly unaided (he gave up painting by numbers three years ago), his work is extremely colourful and attractive as well as being scientifically accurate. Michael Ridley, a Doctor of Gremlinology, and Hon. Fellow of the Gremlin Institute of Humanology exposes the true nature of Gremlins, then shows that they exist and have existed in all parts of the world almost from the beginning of time. Research took him and his colleague, to the far-flung corners of the globe. Dr. Ridley, who also holds a multi-degree (one above third degree) in archaeogremology, treats us to a multi-volume history of Gremlins reduced to a few pages. He also outlines Gremlin philosophy and their social behaviour. Perhaps the most exciting discovery of this intrepid pair was the seat of Gremlin government which is illustrated in all its horrific detail. This is no piece of pure theoretical science, however, for it has its application. In a major section of the book, a large number of Gremlins of all occupations are documented, so that the reader will be able to identify the culprit responsible for his or her misery or misfortune, and perhaps take evasive measures.
