Frederic Bartlett was an influential professor of psychology at Cambridge who made some pioneering experiments in the early 1930s which yield insights into how the human mind approaches given knowledge and the ways in which it manipulates that knowledge. This volume is Professor Bartlett's 1958 exploratory study into various aspects of the psychology of thinking. His approach to the subject is largely, and as far as possible, empirical since conclusions are derived from the new experiments that have been conducted for this research. The design of these experiments and the way in which they were carried out is explained, proceeded by potential conclusions. The chapters are entitled : Thinking as a Form of Skill; Thinking Within Closed Systems - Interpolation, Extrapolation, Evidence in Disguise; Theoretical Thinking; Adventurous Thinking - Two Transitional Experiments, The Thinking of the Experimental Scientist, First Hand about Experimental Thinking, Everyday Thinking, The Artist's Thinking.
